I would like to see some standing starts in vintage racing–they are certainly more exciting and I doubt they are any more dangerous, as the cars would arrive at turn 1 at a slower speed. I’m not sure why else they were abandoned. Of course, there will be a few shunts when cars stall or break half shafts, but these occur at low speeds and in period rarely caused injuries to drivers. I’m sure there were some bad accidents with burst fuel tanks or something in the past, but I can’t think of any off hand, while terrible wrecks with fast rolling starts come immediately to mind, especially at Indy. Does anyone know why we never have them? MJ
Parts of the old Meadowdale Raceway still exist, as “Raceway Woods”, a forest preserve. I live about 10 minutes from the track.
If you’d like to see the remnants of the old track, go to Google Maps and enter these coordinate pairs, then switch to satellite images and you’ll see some of the remaining track, which is now used as a hiking and recreational path. I’ve provided two pairs, which show the north and south areas of the old track. Enjoy!

This is a great blog. Lots of very great old footage from Meadowdale Raceway has been posted on YouTube over the past year. The current forest preserve is a great place to visit. MIRPA organizes great events to promote and preserve this old treasure. Mirpa.org
