All the guys who pit crewed for my Dad put in $5. each, including me, to have a Scalextric set shipped over from England in 1955; I saw the ad in Autosport. The first two cars were all metal Ferrari 500s, and the slot pickups in them were metal wheels that rotated thru about 90 degrees. The next cars we ordered were all plastic Lotuses, with a stick and braided wire pickup. I liked the first ones alot better even tho the plastic cars were faster.
