I don’t know that the 1970 running of the LeMans 24 Hours race is particularly pivotal for the public at large, but that particular running is just so cemented in my mind. I’m sure the documentation of it in the form of McQueen’s LeMans is the key reason. Also significant for Hans Herrmann and Richard Attwood’s victory that gave Porsche their first outright win at the race: A feat they’d repeat 15 more times and started Porsche down their road to winningest team in the event’s history.
These images from Flickr user ZANTAFIO56 only serve to further add to the importance and beauty of the race in my mind. I don’t want to sound lazy (which I am) but your link takes you to a flikr library of many hundreds of pages, starting off with die-cast models. Would you happen to know what page represents where the ’70 Le Mans images begin?

Great photos! Can anyone explain how that Porsche and Ferrari got up onto the banking on the inside of the Dunlp Curve? (Behind the photographer) There does not seem to be any direct access…. and the armco does not seem damaged in any way.. Did they have F1 style cranes in 1970? I have the ‘LeMans’ movie but can’t recall if perhaps this is maybe a set up for a scene from the movie??
Anyone have any ideas?
OK… According to Wikipedia(!) the 917 was Hailwood and Hobbs car that indeed did crash at the Dunlop curve… and i think that the other car isn’t a Ferrari but an Alpha T33/3 of Facetti and Zecolli… Are they up on an embankment or just behind some fencing? Craned over the armco?
