Pull the shoebox out from under your bed and let’s get back to trading some of our Topps World on Wheels cards. This time it’s Lance Reventlow’s baby, the Scarab.
From the card’s reverse: Only three of the powerful American Scarab racers were built in Southern California, but they won many races. Their Chevrolet Corvette engines were modified for racing conditions. Scarab bodies were made of aluminum, shaped by hand. The special frames and brakes were also completely hand-made.
HP: 390 | Top Speed: 165 MPH | Price: $17,000
$17,000! I’ll gladly give you twice that for one!

390 h.p. in Chuck Daigh’s wildest dreams. As for $17K, I believe that’s what Reventlow sold one to Jim Jeffords to for a “friendly price.” In 1959 dollars.

A Chevy 283 with 390HP in 1960?
Pass the dutchie, mon.
Scarab was the progenitor of Chaparral, but $17,000 was huge money at the time. Wonderful cars, though http://t.co/PCrO4rLCiZ
On my list of the five most beautiful racing cars ever built.
If memory serves, RA claimed about 325 hp for the cars in period. Although I wouldn’t put the Scarabs in my top 5, I do agree they were really good looking cars, and I was lucky to see them run in the hands of Lance, Chuck and Bruce. One thing I liked that went unnoticed was their use of T MG door latches–perhaps a bit of whimsy from Ken Miles?
