This Tactic (Still) Doesn’t Work

The new Boxster is lovely. But sit one next to the old Porsche 718 and it looks like garbage. We’ve talked before about marketers doing this “let’s photograph the new one next to the old one and show our lineage and the power of our history” tactic before. It. Does. Not. Work.

I disagree. I think the idea is to show there is a heritage there, a link to the manufacturer’s past. It’s the thing I love about Porsche is you can see the family tree, especially in the 911 series, Cayman in the 904/906 and Boxster in the 550/718s. It’s also why I like the Mustang, Camero and the Challenger.

I DO agree. I understand that they are trying to show the heritage, the links to a glorious past etc. BUT, when sat beside a true classic, the new cars come off as dumpy, depressing reminders of how far down we have slid. The new iterations are simply [greatly] inferior aesthetically, whether they are dynamically ‘better’ or not.
Will the new one outrun the old one? In many cases yes. But if offered the keys to each, which would most of us take? Yep, the old one…
IMNSHO, there is a way to connect the original design[s] to the current offering in ads, but setting them side by side aint it.

Yes…maybe so. BUT ! the reason it works reasonably well is that the ‘new’ car hadnt become a bloated caricature of the original yet. Note tho that the ‘original’ one still looks better… 🙂
