C’s and D’s

Not great for a report card.. Absolutely astounding in this photo of Jack Douglas in the #54 Jaguar D-Type and Carlyle Blackwell in the #18 C-Type. Love the staged shot mimicking a hairy corner and the dramatic pilot underlighting from undoubtedly hot lamps placed in the cockpits.

Thanks to Graham Smith and Aaron Barker on the North American Sportscar Racing Facebook group.

Factories at Work: Cobra

These snaps from the Cobra “assembly line” have been bouncing around Tumblr this week and I couldn’t be more pleased to add them to our gallery of sports and racing factories, workshops, raceshops, and garages.

Bonus, Steve McQueen picking his Windsor block Cobra from the man himself.

Classic Sportscar Ferrari For Sale

Some Favorites From the Petersen Auction

1956 Ferrari 290MM by Scaglietti

The sale on most people’s lips from last weekend’s RM|Sotheby’s auction at the Petersen Museum was (justifiably) the $22Million sale of a 1956 Ferrari 290MM by Scaglietti. The weekend was a success with almost 90% of the lots selling but, amazingly, that single Ferrari made up more than half the dollar value the auction’s total sales. By comparison there were some bargains to be had, and besides it’s always worth pointing out some of the amazing lots that didn’t make headlines.

That $30,000 sale has to be the highest price I’ve seen seen a Vespa command—even for one as rare as the Calessino.

1921 Kissel “Gold Bug” Speedster

1921 Kissel  6-45 “Gold Bug” Speedster

We’ve all seen old black and white mobster movies with a Tommy-gun toting gangster firing away from the running boards of a Model-A while it careens around the corner trying to evade the coppers. This little running board seat (which almost looks like it pulls out of the side like a drawer) would make that so much more comfortable.

This example, which took Best in Class at Pebble Beach in 2018, will be among the gorgeous cars adorning the lawns of the 2019 Boca Raton Concours d’Elegance in February.

Stunning with those body-matched wire knockoffs.

Art Appreciation: Simca Deho Special

I’m having trouble finding verifiable information on this gorgeous little barchetta. Previous sellers have said she has LeMans and Mille Miglia provenance, but I’m not finding it immediately and we’ve all known sellers that were prone to exaggeration. Usually when I can’t dig up much information on a car, I don’t post about it. But one thing about this little machine is immediately certifiable—she’s gorgeous. So despite the lack of concrete information on it, I couldn’t help but share it with you.
Forgive me.

Ladies and Gentlemen, All 6 Daytona Coupes

This image of all 6 Cobra Daytona Coupes that Goodwood tweeted today is indescribable. So instead of reading anything I would write about how amazing it is, just scroll up and look at it some more.

Reader Mystery: Who Knows this Fiberglass Racer?

Darren wrote in trying to track down this fiberglass-bodied, Ford Flathead V8-powered special that his father build when Darren was a child. Anyone know anything about this beauty? Let’s hear about it in the comments.

Update: Locke wrote in with a tantalizing clue.

“An Australian by the name of Nat Buchanan made fiberglass bodies to put on MGs, TR2s, Healeys, etc. One of the bodies was based on the Aston Martin DB3S & that’s what your photo is. A flathead wasn’t a typical engine choice for an MG in Australia, but it was fairly common in the U.S., so I would guess that this was a U.S. built car—assuming the frame is an MG. This was 1957.”

A Vintage Racer Vintage Racing

This photo of Jim Clark in a Model-T Sprint Car almost breaks my brain. It only makes sense for Jimmy in the context of the celebrations surrounding the Indianapolis 500.
This photo was included in a Ford press release for the race and their 495 horsepower V8 that would power the Lotus-Ford in the race. What better way to showcase Ford’s history with the 500 and demonstrate 48 years of automotive engineering maturity than to contrast these two racing machines—each at the pinnacle of technology for their time. Magnificent.

Jaguar's Continuation E-Type Lightweight Prototype is Glorious

New Jaguar E-Type Lightweight
A few months back Jaguar raised all of our spirits with the news that they would fulfill the original build order of 18 E-Type lightweights (only 12 were build in period) to the original specification, from aluminum bodywork to D-type heads. Recently the team has released these photos of the first complete example of the new run and it is absolutely beautiful.
