The Dream to Get #3 Back Home
The trailer for The Quest sure makes the film look worth a watch. I wasn’t familiar with the story of the 1960 LeMans class-winning Briggs Cunningham Corvette and it’s fall into obscurity. But this film’s look at Chip Miller’s discovery, restoration and his dream of returning her to La Sarthe for the 50th anniversary of the John Fitch/Bob Grossman victory is heartbreaking and inspiring. Take a peek.

Like our last look at the racing community of El Salvador, this footage from the Santa Ana races just stopped me in my tracks. We often see photographs of races with little barrier between the on-track action and the off-track spectators but this footage really demonstrates how very precarious the situation really was. It must have been incredibly nerve racking as a driver (particularly during the LeMans style starts shown here). It must have been spectacularly thrilling as a spectator, with those “lucky” few in the front rows equally stepping closer to the action and pushing back against the crowds behind that threatened to nudge you onto the track. The adrenaline must really have been coursing through the veins of these race fans.
Again, many thanks to George Kehler for providing this footage, shot by Dr. Carlos Alvarez when he was just a young teenager. Keep a sharp eye peeled for Pedro Rodriguez in the red green #24 Austin-Healey 100M (he DNFed with ignition problems). Ricardo was also in the race in an OSCA. The day was won by Mauricio Miranda in the #42 Jaguar D-type with 2nd going to Manfredo Schmid in the Mercedes-Benz.
Keep on digging those film cans out of the attics, people. We’d love to share them with readers.
I love these little atmospheric snippets in James Hakesley’s video from the Sunday of the Revival. Following the weekend from across the Pond isn’t easy. While I get to see plenty of photos and video clips from the track, or even the pits, the little moments captured here really give me the feeling of being there. Great stuff.
Lovely snips shot by Roy Pagliacci of the 1969 Monza 1000km. Some from (what looks to me like) turn 8, and a few heatbreakingly brief glimpses of cars entering the banking for the final time. Bellissimo!
Keep digitizing those old film cans, people.
Lovely onboard footage here from the impressive duo of Orange Company Director Tom Alexander and Red Bull team manager Christian Horner in their DB4GT in Sunday’s RAC TT race. The event was cut short when the rain set in, but this onboard footage looks like it was a mighty fun time regardless. Nice capture of the driver change about 6 minutes into the video, and we can see what the rain looked like from the cockpit when it started to come down pretty hard about 13 minutes into the video.
When £30Million worth of GT cars are circling the track you take the rain very, very seriously.

This video promoting the new F1 circuit in Austin Texas starts off expectedly enough: Shots of Texas; DC at the wheel of a Red Bull spinning around Austin’s empty city streets. Just as I was beginning to tire of it, Coulthard pulls off the road and onto a very under-construction track. Turns out contemporary F1 cars are tougher than I thought.
Well done, Red Bull.
Finally! I have been looking for this commercial for years; occasionally running a variety of searches on YouTube in case it’s been uploaded. In August it finally made its way online. Many, many thanks to Richie Ginther’s son Bret, who says:
“I found a few 16mm reels from my dad’s archives and had them converted to digital. This is an undated (ca 1966?) era commercial my father did for Shell oil. The true jewel in this is hearing the Ford GT with my dad piloting it. I hope you enjoy this clip. I have uploaded another Shell commercial of same era with a triple endoresement. Enjoy.”

Here’s another of Brett’s uploads from the Ginther Archives featuring Luigi Chinetti, Ginther, and Jim Hall: also for Shell:
The Road Racers
I think the Johnny Cash song featured in part of this 1979 film sums it up better than I could:
Now I forgot about yesterday and let tomorrow bring what may
Let everything be as it will be
Cause all I need is my machine and a little high octane gasoline
And get your hands off me I’m rollin’ free
Usually I don’t categorize something under Video AND Audio, but I’m going to make an exception for this ridiculously lovely sounding clip from the Gstaad Classic 2011 rally. Check out Sports Car Digest’s event report and marvelous gallery of Julien Mahiels’ shots from the event.
