Alfa Romeo Tipo 33 Stradale at 2018 Ville d’Este

Will those supermodels get out of the way! I’m trying to see the Alfa!

Fangio at Laguna Seca 1985

Hans Sipma had his Super-8mm camera in hand to capture a long-dormant Tipo 159 Alfetta getting the cobwebs cleared out by a 74-year-old Juan Manuel Fangio. Wow.

Thanks for sending this in, Paul.

Beautiful Vintage(?) Poster

Update:

Thanks to Miguel and a few commenters on facebook for tracking down the artist. Timba Smits illustrated this piece for Dunlop commemorating 100 years of the 24 Hours. Unfortunately I don’t see a print on his site, but you should absolutely head over there to see more of their beautiful work. Gorgeous.

I’ve seen a number of Pinterest members and eBay sellers calling this a 1950 LeMans poster. The Jag and Ferrari pictured here make that impossible.. But I can’t seem to find anything more about it.

It looks to me like a contemporary illustration meant to evoke the 50s. I’d love to credit the artist here and maybe get a print. Anyone know anything about it?

An Outlaw Aurelia

I was all set to make fun of this thing when I saw a link to it, but this outlaw-style modified Lancia Aurelia B20GT looks mighty badass. The stripped chrome makes it look more modern—almost to the point that you could squint your eyes and convince yourself that the Bentley Boys are headed back to LeMans in a stripped contemporary Continental GT. Almost.

Holiday Corvettes: LeMans 1960

Corvettes at LeMans. 1960.

When you need a half hour break from the family over the next few days, you could do worse than putting on the headphones and watching this short documentary about Corvette’s efforts at the 1960 24 Hours of LeMans. Corvette has become a prominent (sometimes dominant) team at the 24 in recent years, but that wasn’t necessarily the case in 1960 when the ‘Vette was still wrestling with the sentiment that the car was underpowered at its debut 7 years earlier.

Mixed Lot

Triumph leads Ford and Porsche at Sebring ’66.

Sebring. 1966. A place where these three cars could share a corner and not look odd.

Some Favorites From the Petersen Auction

1956 Ferrari 290MM by Scaglietti

The sale on most people’s lips from last weekend’s RM|Sotheby’s auction at the Petersen Museum was (justifiably) the $22Million sale of a 1956 Ferrari 290MM by Scaglietti. The weekend was a success with almost 90% of the lots selling but, amazingly, that single Ferrari made up more than half the dollar value the auction’s total sales. By comparison there were some bargains to be had, and besides it’s always worth pointing out some of the amazing lots that didn’t make headlines.

That $30,000 sale has to be the highest price I’ve seen seen a Vespa command—even for one as rare as the Calessino.

Early GoPro Prototype

The modern GoPro really is a minor miracle, isn’t it?

1921 Kissel “Gold Bug” Speedster

1921 Kissel  6-45 “Gold Bug” Speedster

We’ve all seen old black and white mobster movies with a Tommy-gun toting gangster firing away from the running boards of a Model-A while it careens around the corner trying to evade the coppers. This little running board seat (which almost looks like it pulls out of the side like a drawer) would make that so much more comfortable.

This example, which took Best in Class at Pebble Beach in 2018, will be among the gorgeous cars adorning the lawns of the 2019 Boca Raton Concours d’Elegance in February.

Stunning with those body-matched wire knockoffs.
