My late father, an engineer, thought the first Elite was the most beautifully-proportioned automobile he ever saw. I was still a teenager at the time (1960), and he hauled me over to Chamberlain’s store in North Hollywood so would we could both drool over the cars in the showroom. Jay was kind enough to lend a car for display at the local community college’s summer car show, and it was a hit! I loved the way the door glass stored in the pocket behind each seat. My dad almost bought one. Glad he didn’t, in hindsight. The quality issues and Chapman’s refusal to stand behind his product drove Jay to distraction.
